Professional Development Training
Building Stronger Community Leadership Through Practical Digital Skills
Malak Foundation was pleased to support and host a professional development training session focused on strengthening community leadership, meeting management, public speaking and event preparation. The session brought together community members and emerging leaders who were interested in improving the practical skills they use every day when working with committees, volunteers, community organisations and local networks.
The training focused on the simple but important tools that help community groups operate more effectively. Participants explored how to prepare and manage meetings, develop clear agendas, keep discussions on time, record decisions and actions, and ensure that both in-person and online meetings are inclusive and productive. Particular attention was also given to online meeting moderation and the use of common digital platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google products, including tools that can support communication, document sharing, collaboration and meeting preparation.
A key part of the session was helping participants understand that effective community leadership is not only about having good ideas. Strong leadership also requires organisation, communication, confidence, accountability and the ability to use everyday technology well. Many community organisations rely heavily on volunteers, so practical systems can make a major difference in reducing confusion, improving follow-up and ensuring that decisions are properly recorded and acted upon.
Participants also received guidance on public speaking, preparing community events and creating a professional meeting environment. The session encouraged attendees to think about how they chair discussions, involve quieter participants, manage dominant voices, handle questions and keep meetings focused on outcomes. For online meetings, participants considered how to manage microphones, chat functions, screen sharing, participant engagement and moderation so that digital meetings remain organised and respectful.
The training was designed to be practical and easy to apply immediately. Participants were encouraged to use templates for agendas, minutes, action registers and event planning, and to make greater use of free and widely available digital tools that can improve the way community organisations work.
Malak Foundation is proud to continue supporting community capacity building and leadership development. Community organisations often achieve a great deal with limited resources, and improving practical skills can help volunteers and committee members work more confidently, professionally and effectively.
We thank everyone who attended and contributed to the session. We hope the knowledge, tools and practical examples shared during the training will continue to support participants in their current roles and help them strengthen the communities they serve.
Malak Foundation remains committed to supporting stronger, more connected and more capable communities through practical education, leadership development and collaboration.
